Research into music channels - Miss Georgiou

MTV Music

The target audience for MTV are aged between 12-30 years old. This is because young people enjoy the latest music as most music is aimed at the younger generation. MTV plays mainly pop and mainstream music. Some examples of artist who feature on a regular basis are Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and Little Mix.

The black and white colouring is simplistic and bold which creates and makes a statement to the audience, making them noticeable and distinguishable. Also the graffiti writing helps appeal to the mainstream audience as its youthful and therefore relevant to the audience. With the simple black and white logo it allows the audience to stay focused on the content the channel has rather than the logo/graphics.

MTV channels are owned by MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, a unit of the Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom. Viacom also own other MTV channels such as MTV hits, MTV Jams, MTV 2. But also own other popular  channels such as VH1, Nickolodean, BET and much more. This shows that Viacom are very capable of managing brands and making them popular. This is probably done through there marketing of the channels and the high quality content in the channels. This helps to deliver a good TV channel to an audience.

4 music

4 music is a music and entertainment channel launched on 15 August 2008. 4 music is owned by Box television(Bauer Media Group/Channel Four Television Corporation)  4 music have many sister channels such as The box, channel 4, film 4 etc. These channels that are owned by Box are all uk founded/based. Which again are all very popular.

The target audience for 4music are 16-34. They wanted to extend the target audience to make the market larger. So they can gain more viewers. 4 music play all genres of music such as hip hop, rock, pop, indie, R&B, dance, folk etc. this allows them to cater to a wider audience. Making content for a mass media - gaining them more views therefore, giving them more sales. Artists that are coonly seen on 4music are Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Rudimental and more.

The 4 music logo is very simple and memorable. The 4 connects it with other popular TV channels such as channel 4, film 4. So it already gives 4music a good name due to that connection. The futuristic styled graphics appeal to the young audience. As it is urban and looks young and unique. It also related the the content the channel will hold which is urban/latest music for young people.

Kiss TV

Is also owned Box television (Bauer Media Group/Channel Four Television Corporation) it was launces on June 26 1998. There sister channels are magic, smash hits, the box and more.

Kiss TV is aimed at 15-34s and they can stretch that due to there radio channels (Kiss fm) as many of the listeners are older as they drive/listen to the radio.

The logo is very simple and very noticeable. As the don't is what is used mainly in terms of branding for kiss as a whole. It is simple but memorable. And allows everything kiss does to be remembered.

Andrew Goodwins theory - Miss Georgiou

Goodwins theory is based in 7 main principles of what should be included in a music video to make it successful.

These are:

  1. Genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance metal video, dance routine in girl band)
  2. Links between lyrics and visuals (Complimentary, contradicting or amplifying)
  3. Links between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
  4. The demand for the record label will include the need of lots of close ups of the artist. And the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.
  5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  6. There is often intersexual reference to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc
  7. Whether the video is primarily performance based, narrative based or concept based and how elements in each are used in it.
In this essay I will be analysing the Beyonce- Best thing I never had music video whilst referring to the 7 main principles.

In the opening scene of the music video Beyonce is displayed wearing little/minimal clothing. This is shown through the cinematography, mid shot of her in her bedroom. This relates to the voyeurstiristic treatment of the female body from goodwins theory. As she is undressed and the camera looks like it's observing her body. To the audience this shows beyonce in a vulnerable state as she is undressed and sometimes unaware that the camera is filming her.

In the music video beyonces sings 'your sad... boohoo' when Beyonce lip syncs she also mimes along to it by using actions to pretend she's sad for he ex-boyfriend who cheated on her and now regrets it/misses her. Beyonce amplifies this by doing a very sarcastic crying action. This matches what the lyrics are trying to say through mise-en-scene, facial expressions/actions. This relates to the Goodwins theory as it shows that the lyrics and visuals match and amplify the meaning of the song. Of Beyonce being happy that she didn't have him as she's living a great life now.

In the music video at 2.04 there is an upbeat pace at this point Beyonce runs down a hill at the same pace. This can represent Beyonce's heart big whilst she was running down the hill. Which again illustrates how she felt in that situation of her life. This match of the music and visuals makes it connect with the audience more, referring to goodwins theory it illustrates how she feels connecting with the pace of the music.

In this video Beyonce is shown having many close ups which are all spread out. This is shown through cinematography, close ups. These allow us to see beyonce up close and recognise her face. It also keeps a more memorable image of Beyonce in our minds. So that we will always be able to remember Beyonce's face. In Goodwins theory it states that close ups are used due to the demand of the record label it will include the need of lots of close ups of the artist in a music video.

The music video is primarily narrative based 50%, concept 30% and performace 20%. The reason I made narrative so large is because I feel that Beyonce is talking about something she personally went through - a breakup due to an unfaithful young boyfriend. But then shows how she's over it by her being a newly wed, having a much better life/lifestyle. The evidence of the narrative is shown when Beyonce is watching the old looking video of her and her ex at prom. Which is something obviously personal to Beyonce and not something everyone can relate to.
However, the concept is much more relatable to the wider audience. As it's about marriage and marrying the actual man of her dreams. As Beyonce seems to look dreamy throughout the video until she's actually married to the new man. Even though it is also a personal story it can also be relatable to the general audience. The concept and theme is all about marriage as at the beginning she is shown getting dressed, reflecting on past lovers then all dressed in a wedding gown, then attending her wedding.
Furthermore, Beyonce is shown lip singing and doing a bit of dancing during her video which makes the video more personal and interactive with the audience.

Lastly, the genre characteristics in this video is that R&B/pop videos tend to include the theme about love/a love interest.
