Planning cinematography - Miss Georgiou

Cinematography adds diversity to a music video, it appeals to the audience and makes a big impact on the song itself, revealing a hidden meaning, for example, a close up can heighten the meaning of sadness. It is essential as it makes a music video more interesting, if only one shot was used it would become boring and monotone, displaying the artist as uninteresting and may disengage the audience.

The music video I will be creating would most likely include close ups, mid shots, long shots, high angles and tracking shots.

A close up will be used to represent my artist as emotional and sad. Close ups are good for grabbing detail and facial expressions from a face, which will add depth to the music video. Allowing the audience to see clearly how the artist feels, which is sad. This will cause the audience to have sympathy for the artist which could build a stronger connection between the audience and artist. Close ups also allow the artist to develop motifs, establish a mood in the music video. Motifs are usually developed when close ups are taken of iconogoraphy this may be shown of a close up of a guitar to show how much the guitar means to the artist and how its apart of the artist, this would be a motif. Close ups are very conventional to the indie genre as it helps the artist to be seen as more genuine and true which is something indie artists aim to do.

Mid shots would represent the artist as bold and confident, It also shows that the artist is the main character in the music video. The positioning of a mid shot takes up most of the space of the frame, which also inforces the artists importance and status. Mid shots will therefore represent the artist as someone who is fearless. As the storyline is about running away this will fit in well with the type of message we are trying to convey in our music video which is that you can overcome every situation you go through and turn out happy. So bravery and confidence is what we want to send out to the audience by using a mid shot. Midshots are also conventional in the indie genre as it helps to establish the artists image and costume, giving them a self-effacing brand image.

Long shots help to identify and establish a location, developing the artists understanding of the setting. Long shots in our music video would be used to show the house, field, forests etc. All these locations are convnentional to the indie genre and long shots of these type of locations are often shown in indie music videos. This is to create a mysterious setting with suspense, which indie artists aim to do. It will represent my artist as cool, edgy and eccentric as the location will look eerie through the help of a long shot.

High angles are also used to establish a setting and diminish the size of the artist. I am planning to include a high angle of the artist for the train scene. To display how small the artist is in his situation, but he still remains strong. To my audience they will sympathise with the artist and see him as their role model. High angles are not very conventional in indie music videos as they tend to keep angles natural and simple but a high angle will help heigthen the image of the artist, so I feel that a high angle would be good to use.

Lastly, a tracking movement will be used on the grass, it would match the pace of the music. I feel that tracking would help to make a smooth transition between scenes and match the ryhthm of the song. This would help display the artist as smooth and appear more fun and cool to the audience. As the pace of the visuals and lyrics would match. Tracking is conventional in the indie genre as it helps to add to the beat of the song, guitar and other conventional indie instruments, which would make it more interesting.

To conclude, my target audience will build a relationship with my artist through all of these five shots/angles. As these shots/angles help to create sympathy (close up), mid shot (importance) for the artist and much more. Which allow the audience to feel as though they know the artist well as they will start to develop feelings and emotions for the artist as he will be displayed as sad, brave and bold through close ups. The target audience will be more likely to support my artist through the use of these shots.

  1. This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of why you have selected to use a variety of camera shots in your music video. You have considered the effect that is created, but you also need to focus on where the shots will be evident in the video and why?
