planning lighting and colour - Miss Georgiou

Lighting styles and colours are essential in a music video. Different colours have different meanings and connotations which can be transferred to the audience, this can change the audience’s mood. Colours are pleasing to the eye and can keep an audience entertained. A lighting style can also give a music video an atmosphere, for example, low key lighting is often used to create suspense and tension for the audience. Whereas, high key lighting can be used to create an upbeat atmosphere for a music video.

In my own indie music video both high key lighting and low key lighting will be used and dull colours such as grey, blue, yellow, green and brown will be focused upon.

High key lighting would create an upbeat mood to the audience, which will match the pace and rhythm of our chosen song. High key lighting will also be used to portray the artist as lively and spirited. As the lyrics convey the artist as a brave person, running away and taking a risk so high key lighting will do best in portraying the artist as someone full of energy and hope.
High key lighting is conventional to the indie genre as this lighting is typically used to enhance the mood of the song and display a natural looking setting which doesn't look to artificial. This is due to indie artists wanting to appear more real and genuine.

Low key lighting will be presented when the father is shown in his bedroom to display his state of mind which is depressed and suffering from alcoholism. As low key lighting is often used to show how dark an individuals mind is and to add intensity to a scene. This will be beneficial to use when portraying a father who is not in a good mindset.
Low key lighting is also conventional to the indie music genre, it creates mystery and tension, allowing the indie artist to been seen as someone who has depth.

The dull colours will be used to portray sadness, lifelessness and loneliness. As dull colours display sorrow which is the underlying theme of the song itself, as the song is about being unhappy at home due to an alcoholic father.
Dull colours such as the ones listed above tend to be shown in a music video to display simplicity and naturalness. The colours typically seen on the streets of london/Britain are yellows and oranges from the sunset, greens from nature and greys from buildings. These colours will make the scene look more relatable for a British based audience.

These lighting and colours will help my audience to understand what message the artist is giving off, which is a somber one. It will allow them to have sympathy for the artist and see that the artist is real, deep and genuine despite his successful and fame.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques of the lighting and colours that you would like to include within your music video. You have made a start in considering the effect that will be created within the indie genre. However, further discussion of where the lighting will be seen is needed to explore your understanding further and to demonstrate further planning techniques.
