Planning Digipak - Miss Miller

A digipak typically consists of a gatefold (book style)paperboard or cardboard outer binding, with one or more plastic trays for the CD. Digipak style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Digipaks grew more popular during the early 2000s. It is different to a CD case as a CD jewel case is a three-piece plastic case which contains a CD along with the liner notes and a back card. Digipak's consist of more pictures, information and exclusive bonus feautures for the audience than a jewel CD case does. It allows the fans to find out exclusive information and gain something with a more personal feel from their favourite artist. They are effective as they allow the audience to get a insight into why the album was created, the process etc. And build a better connection with the artist and their brand, this is good for the artists sales. It also serves the fans as it feeds them with exclusive information from the artist for the artist.

I will be creating a digipak for Ed Sheeran's upcoming album 'x'. Planning is needed as it will make sure that I have all the elements necessary for a digipak to deem successful for the audience. It will also allow me to then go on to make continuous improvements to my digipak and make it more appealing to the audience. Rather than not planning and just improvising, where careless mistakes could be made as I would of not had much of an orderly plan or vision.

I will be using green for the title of my digipak which is Ed Sheeran. Green is a colour which is used on his album 'x' so it will help add consitency to his artistry, and allow it to be easily identified by his fans as it will follow an already known theme. The picture itself will use dull colours to appeal to the indie genre as low-key lighting and eerie pictures tend to be used in the genre. So I plan to use a close up of eerie lighting to give an indie feel to the audience and to display the artist as self-effacing.
The close up will be the central focus of the digipak,as it will take up the front cover. However, the gatefold will display many different graphics and personal information written from our artist to the audience to make it appear exclusive and special to fans.

The typography used will be natural and simplistic, which will contrast with Ed Sheeran's style of music which is simple and raw. And will allow the audience to see the artist as a real, conventional artist who is real and relatable. I would most likely associate parts of the text with British slang, as it is aimed at a British young audience. But only one word or phrase would be British as I would still aim to make it globalised and universal.

To conclude, it allowed me to realise what types of images I need for my digipak, which is close ups with a self-effacing close up. These images will then be edited to give an amateurish effect, so the planning helped me to understand my vision for the digipak in more depth.

  1. You have provided a minimal analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen some elements to use within your advert.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you state whether you will include a personal message/acknowledgment from the artist and why
    2) Make sure you explain all elements fully in terms of what they create for the audience and how it will help promote the artist - your points are too brief and summed up
    3) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist
    4) Make sure you cover all points - style of language etc.
    5) A digipak has more than one picture so you need to talk about all 6 slides and what each will contain!
    6) Remember you need to come up with your own artist and album name so change this!
    7) Include a picture of your drawing
