Planning editing styles - Miss Georgiou

Editing styles are important for a music video, as it helps to make a music video more visually appealing for the audience. The edit is the part of the video creation process where the original vision starts to become a reality. It's also where you get the first chance to repair any production errors, and where you can tie the music and images together. Assuming all the footage has been captured as planned and there are plenty of takes and angles, it's the edit that can make or break a video.   - Soundonsound.com

Editing styles are used to add diversity to a music video and increase the entertainment element for the audience. As editing allows a scene/frame to change to another with a good transition, creating more entertainment for the audience as they will be viewing a range of different images and shots.

For the music video that my group and I will be creating, I aim to include editing styles such as, filters, continuinity editing and time lapse.

Filters are often used over the top of clips or the entire video to give a certain idea to the viewer, such as memory, age to the video or showing the song in a positive or negative light. For example, In Ellie Goulding's 'Your song', she uses a filter on the memory clips to show the past and her thoughts and the present time has no filter. Black and white or sepia are the main filters used to create a rustic look. Filters are very conventional to the indie genre, as its a way of expressing deeper meaning and feeling to the audience which is something indie artists like to portray, they like to show depth and connotations in their music videos. The black and white will help filter will also convey simplicity and hardship, but I aim to remove filter for the end of the video to show that the artist has a happy ending. Therefore, the filter will be used to follow the storyline of the lyrics and convey the artists emotions.

A time lapse is a technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that used to view the sequence. When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. I will use a time lapse for the bridge scene, which will show the artist on the bridge and the people surrounding him moving at a faster pace. This will convey that the artrist is stuck in time, stuck in his situation and can't move forward. This will again reflect the artists lyrics and the situation which the artist is in, allowing the audience to then have sympathy for the artist. A time lapse is commonly used in indie music videos the display a jump in time, giving a futuristic feel to the audience which is unconventional and unique. This is something which indie artists tend to do, bring authenticity to there music video. Lana Del Rey uses a time lapse on a blossoming flower in her music video 'Video games'.

Lastly, continuity editing will be used to make sure that the music video shots flow well and that it makes sense to the audience and does not confuse them. Continuity should be evident in most genres, as long as it was intending to do so. As these mistakes could make or break the music video as without continuity the audience would most likely not understand the hidden meaning and vision that the music video aimed to give. The smooth and clear transitioning will allow the artist to be seen as a cool, smooth character, which could possibly make our artist more likeable to the target audience.

To conclude, my target audience can build a relationship with my artist through all of these editing styles. The time lapse will allow the audience to have sympathy for the artist, as he will be displayed as different and lost in the world through the time lapse. The filters will add a somber tone to the music video, allowing the audience to view my artist as someone with deep emotions and depth, which alot of the audience can then relate to and feel a connection with the artist due to them having common ground. The continuity will make the artist appear to look professional and cool, which could potentially allow the artist to be viewed as a star and a brand. This could help build the artists fan base which would lead to a stronger connection between the audience and musician.

  1. This post demonstrates proficient planning techniques, which is evident through the editing styles that you have decided to include within your production. Aim to relate your examples back to the lyrics of your song, to demonstrate further planning of why you have decided to include certain styles within your music video.
